How to get volume in your hair

step by step from ladies night on how to get volume in your hair. 

Things you’ll need:

2-hair clips

1-round brush

A nice blow-dryer

 

a dozen velcro rollers

 

 

step 1:Apply one pump of N.4 blowdry lotion and one pump of N.4 support solution  to towel dried hair (70% dry).  Comb hair out so it’s nice a smooth.

step 2:take those two clips and section out the back of your hair.  The secret is keeping everything nice and neat.  It may take a little longer your first time but as time goes on you’ll whip it out in no time.

step 3:start with the back section.  You can section the whole bottom half section into two sections, the right and the left.  Start blow drying.  Keep the blow-dryer above the hair working the air away from the scalp.  This closes the follicles and gives your hair that amazing shine.

step 4:When each section is completely dry, wrap hair in one of your velcro rollers.  If it doesn’t feel secure fasten it with a bobby pin.  Work your way up to the crown.  Then work the sides in the same fashion.

step 5:You should now be left with a mohawk section at the top of your head.  This is where your going to want to most volume.  You can take it in 3 to 4 sections depending on how thick your hair is.  Start at the back section, you want to pull that hair straight up and blow it til completely dry.  As soon as it’s dry wrap it around that roller.  You want all the sections to still be warm when wrapping it in the rollers.  When wrapped they will cool down and set in each roller.  Repeat for your last few sections.

step 6:Do your make-up, brush your teeth, do any last minute outfit changes.  All the sections need to cool down.  If your running out of time you can hit air with the cool button on your blow-dryer.

Step 7:Spay with N 4 Mighty Hair Spray.  Remove all the rollers, flip your hair and your ready to hit the town.

So I was minding my own business one day and got a phone call from the owner of my salon with an intriguing question.  She had been contacted by the producers of a new TV reality show for the Style Network called “Momster of the Bride.” They found us through our website and were impressed by how great Salon Bleu looked.  The idea behind the show was that a girl was being tormented in her wedding plans by an overbearing mother.  The Style Network wanted to know if we’d like to participate.  So when I got that call from the owner with the exciting question of “would you like to do the bride’s hair for this show?” you can bet that my answer was “heck yes!!”

At my consultation appointment with the bride, I  was informed that the producers had thought of a humorous, although mean, prank to pull on this pushy mother. As a very long haired girl, this bride had decided on an up-do hairstyle for her special day. Her mother, however, was dead-set on a “curled and down” hairdo.  Her mom was so overbearing that this sweet girl hadn’t even cut her hair for years!  After hearing all the details, I was totally in for this prank. I attached some extensions to the bride’s hair and as the “momster” walked around the corner of the salon, I hacked into the extensions, cutting about 12 inches off the length.

Well, to no ones surprise, the “momster” started freaking out! Tears came streaming down, cuss words were flying, evil eyes cut into me, and I was unsure of what she may do!  So before it went too far but not before the filming crew had a chance to catch this all on camera, we let her in on our prank. I am not exaggerating when I say that mother was going to end up smacking one of us, so we had to calm her down and show her the extensions. This prank couldn’t have happened any better, it was hilarious!

We continued filming for a few hours and finished the trial. By the time we were done, the bride’s hair looked beautiful in the up-do style.

On her wedding day, I styled her hair as I had on our trial day. The result was exquisite; sexy and elegant. Momster, however, did slip in her opinion that she still desired a “down style,” even on the wedding day but I was going to do what the bride wanted, of course.

When I saw the episode air on the Style Network it was amazing to see my work on TV!  I’ll never forget my fifteen minutes of fame.  Actually I was on the show for about two minutes after two, eight hour days of filming. This was a super fun experience but after seeing myself on TV, I think I’ll stick to my first love, doing great hair at Salon Bleu. But never say never!

Low Maintenance Hair coloring with underlighting

Underlighting is a great way to add color to your hair with very little maintenance and with very little commitment.  You can add depth and dimension to your hair by using color under the crown of your hair. This way there is virtually no regrowth and requires little to no maintenance until you are ready to change to your next style. This look can be created on any length color and cut of hair. With summer just around the bend, this is a great way lighten the hair without fully committing to highlights.

THE CONSULT
During my consultation with Bethany, she told me that she wanted more layers and a few natural looking highlights put in her hair,  but that she didn’t want to come in every six weeks to get her roots done. We were making small talk….when all of a sudden she said the two most glorious words in a hairstylists dictionary…….blah blah blah…….”VIRGIN  HAIR.”   I felt like a kid in a candy shop, a girl about to get her first kiss, an night under a Italian moon with a vintage wine. Oh the places we could go and the things we could do with her hair.  But alas,…the clouds parted and then it came to me like a gift from God, UNDERLIGHTING!  I said to myself, “Yes Nicole, that’s it, pure brilliance!”  Nothing gets the creative juices flowing in a hairstylists mind like hearing the words, “Virgin Hair.”  I knew I could create the desired look and achieve all of the criteria she asked for, while giving her beautiful radiant hair. She started with naturally dark hair that was healthy, shiny and beautiful but just lacked dimension. With under lighting we could give her the desired dimension that her hair lacked, while still maintaining that brilliant shine.
THE PROCESS
I went back to mix the color and I could hardly contain my excitement, I rejoiced to the heavens and to my co-stylists and took some deep breaths to bring myself back down to the earthly realms. Upon my new found clarity, I decided to use 2 different colors, one that would result in a medium rich brown and the other a more carmel blond. I used a random foil pattern to create the natural look and alternated my colors. Under the dryer she went and 40 minutes later, Voila we had beautiful color. As we discussed in the consultation I decided to cut layers into her hair that would accentuate the color that we just did. The result was gorgeous multi dimensional hair with lots of depth. I also decided to add curls to her hair to finish off her perfectly cut and colored hair because curls are the perfect way to show off dimension. Curls grab color and follow the curl pattern down the hair shaft and show off multiple colors effortlessly. After all was said and done Bethany was so excited to have a new style that worked with her lifestyle. I thought to my genius self, “man she looks good!”  I was exceptionally pleased with the outcome and felt that we were able to richen and soften her all over look. And the best compliment of all in Bethany’s own words, “I LOVE IT!!!”

Letting your hair down

Adding a little wave to your hair can be easier than you think.  Hot rollers and Velcro rollers are going to be your new best friends.  You can completely change your look just by the direction you place your roller.

For a free falling tasseled look rollers should be rolled away from your face.  Part hair in a mohawk section take the first section closest to your forehead and roll down and away from you.  Repeat until entire section is in rollers (5-6 rollers).  Do the same to each side section.  Use your roller as a guide on how much hair to pick up.  When using hot rollers let them cool down completely before removing them, this will set the hair and your style will last much longer.  Comb out curls using your fingers.

For a more polished look simply roll forward.  Give it a light spray of hairspray before removing  rollers.  For this look you can use a brush to mold curls into style.
